How to smoke-map gopher tunnels, step by step

- Find the freshest mound. Fresh gopher mounds are fan- or crescent-shaped with dark, moist, crumbly soil and a visible dirt plug off to one side. Old, crusted mounds sit over tunnels the gopher may have abandoned — start with the newest dirt.
- Open the lateral tunnel. The plugged entrance sits on the flat side of the fan, usually 6–12 inches from the mound's center. A few methods circulate endlessly online that range from useless to genuinely dangerous. Skip all of these:
- Gasoline down the hole. Never. You're pouring an explosive, groundwater-contaminating liquid into a ventilation network under your own lawn. It rarely reaches the gopher and the fire and vapor risk is real.
- Car exhaust piped into the burrow. A popular internet trick, and a bad one — you're running a hot engine unattended with an improvised hose rig, generating carbon monoxide near where you're standing and working. The gopher usually plugs the tunnel anyway.
- Chewing gum, glass shards, ultrasonic spikes. No credible evidence any of these work. Save the money for traps.
- Flooding, by itself. Water can push a gopher to the surface occasionally, but established networks drain and the animal rides it out in a high chamber. At best it's a soggy version of the smoke problem.
