Is It Legal to Buy Smoke Bombs?

Yes — in most U.S. states, wire-pull smoke grenades and smoke canisters are legal for adults 18+ to purchase and use on private property. They are not classified as explosives, fireworks, or incendiary devices under federal law when used as directed.

Safe Use Guidelines

• Always use outdoors in open, well-ventilated areas. Never use in enclosed spaces.
• Keep away from dry vegetation and flammable materials. Smoke bombs burn at moderate temperatures and can ignite dry grass or leaves.
• Set on non-flammable surfaces — the canister base heats during use. Concrete, asphalt, or dirt are fine. Do not hold in hand for the full burn duration.
• Wire pull safety: Keep the wire straight and pull firmly in one motion. Do not re-insert or attempt to re-ignite a spent canister.
• Keep away from children. For ages 18+ only.
• Do not point at people or animals during ignition.
