Hazmat Shipping & State Legality Guide for Smoke Bombs

Hazmat Shipping & State Legality: Can Shutter Bombs Ship to You?

Smoke bombs are classified as hazardous materials (Hazmat) by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). This affects how they ship, where they can ship, and how long delivery takes. Here's everything you need to know before ordering. For the rules on where you can legally use them, see our Safety & Legal guide.

How Shutter Bombs Ships

  • Carrier: UPS or FedEx Ground (Hazmat-certified carriers), signature required
  • Ground only: No express, overnight, or air shipping — the DOT hazmat classification means every order travels by certified ground transport
  • Where we ship: Contiguous (lower 48) US only, excluding Massachusetts
  • Hawaii, Alaska & Puerto Rico: We cannot ship smoke bombs to HI, AK, or PR — they are accessible by air only, and hazmat cannot travel by air
  • No PO boxes: A physical street address is required (no PO boxes), and a signature is required on delivery
  • International: Currently US domestic only
  • Delivery time: Ships within 1–3 business days — often same day on orders placed before 2:00 PM CST — then 3–7 business days ground transit (about 5–10 business days total)

Shipping Cost

Shipping is a flat hazmat ground fee based on your order total: $40 for orders under $125, $30 for $125–$174.99, $15 for $175–$224.99, and FREE on orders of $225 or more.

Hazmat Shipping FAQ

Why does my order take about 5–10 business days?
Hazmat Ground shipping cannot be expedited. All smoke bombs must travel by ground transportation (no air) per DOT regulations. Orders ship within 1–3 business days — often same day when placed before 2:00 PM CST — and then spend about 3–7 business days in ground transit.
What does shipping cost?
A flat hazmat ground fee based on order total: $40 under $125, $30 for $125–$174.99, $15 for $175–$224.99, and free at $225 or more. This covers the certified packaging and carrier documentation required for legal Hazmat shipment.
Why can't you ship to Massachusetts, Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico?
We ship to the contiguous (lower 48) US, excluding Massachusetts. Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico are accessible by air only, and hazmat-classified goods cannot travel by air. We also cannot deliver to PO boxes — a physical street address with a signature on delivery is required.
Can I pick up locally or do store pickup?
Shutter Bombs is an e-commerce brand and does not have a physical retail location. All orders ship from our fulfillment center.
What if my order is lost or damaged in transit?
All Hazmat shipments are insured. If your package arrives damaged or doesn't arrive within the estimated delivery window, contact us immediately at hello@shutterbombs.com with your order number.
Can I return smoke bombs?
Every product is backed by our 100% Guarantee: if an item arrives faulty, you choose store credit at 1.5x the unit price or an exact refund of the product cost. Orders can be cancelled for a full refund any time before they ship. Due to Hazmat regulations we cannot accept returns of used product. Email hello@shutterbombs.com to start a claim.

Use Restrictions by Location Type

Smoke bombs emit smoke only — no open flame and no explosion — but you still need permission and a safe location. Always check the rules for where you plan to shoot.

  • 🚫 National Parks: Smoke devices are prohibited on all National Park Service lands — see Are smoke bombs legal in national parks?
  • 🚫 State Parks: Varies by state — check with the specific park before your visit
  • 🚫 Beaches (some states): Several states restrict smoke devices on public beaches
  • Private Property: Legal with property owner permission
  • Privately rented venues/farms: Legal with venue permission
  • ⚠️ During fire bans: Never use during active fire bans regardless of legal status
